Soul Coughing Cyber-Talk

9/16/96

Lyon, France

OnlineHost : On "Irresistible Bliss," New York's Soul Coughing continues

their search for the perfect combination of the Weird Noise, the Phat Beat

and the Blissful Pop Moment. It is an album of musical and lyrical

epiphanies. Recorded in New York in the second half of 1995, "Irresistible

Bliss" reflects Soul Coughing's fearless approach to songwriting.

Coughing96 : Hey everybody

Coughing96 : We are Live from Lyon France

Coughing96 : Sorry for the delay. It is 3:45 in france

Coughing96 : Soul Coughing coming your way

Coughing96 : Doughty here

Withcobai : IT WAS ODD TO ME TO SEE YOU PLAYING WITH JEFF BUCKELY, HOW DID

THAT COME ABOT

Coughing96 : I've known Jeff for a bunch of years. I met him the smae time I

met Mark at the Knitting factory in 1992

Question : HAVE YOU HEARD ALOT OF COMPLIMENTS FROM OTHER ARTIST, ON YOUR

SOUND, OR OTHER BANDS INSPIRED BY YOU?

Coughing96 : We seem to be very much a band's band. I have no idea why that

is

SilverS85 : How does it feel to be opening for Dave Matthews?!

Coughing96 : The most amazing part about it is walking out on stage and

seeing a digital scoreboard roughly the size of my house. It feels pretty

amazing.

CBeberg : Hey, Doughty. How do you guys like Europe so far...?

Coughing96 : Yurp is cool. Great cheese. I always tend to think people are

talking about things much more... interesteing than they actually are becuase

I don't speak french.

LKwan8232 : What is your song "Collapse" about?

Coughing96 : Its about a record company executive that is murdered by a whor

in a hotel room... juxtaposed by a large aggressive company taking over a

smaller company

WWACS : Doughty, they asked Mick, they asked Jerry, well, do you see

yourself doing this at age 50?

Coughing96 : Sadly I have no other marketable skills

Dinsmoose : Do you consider yourselves a continuation of the beat tradition?

Coughing96 : I never really read the beats... and don't really have much

affection for them.. It would be really pretentious of me, but if pressed, I

would compare myself to poets like... Amiri Baraka and other poets of the

60's. ... Such a compicated question.

SoulFlu : Will Soundtrack to Mary become like Casiotone?Example: soundtrack

to mcnugget....huh?

Coughing96 : I promise to steal that idea and not pay you for it.

Question : Are you going to be playing with the Dave Matthews Band in

Madison, WI on Wednesday night?

Coughing96 : God, I don't know I am completely lost out here... except that

tomorrow I will be out here somewhere in France.

JByrnes86 : What's your opinion about large 1000 seat venues and smaller

club venues?

Coughing96 : Different spaces have different demands. Ultimately I think you

need larger, simpler gestures in large places. I love small, intimate stages,

but am also interested in dealing with the large spaces

Bob LaBla : hey, guys. did you get hype williams signed on to direct the

"bon bon" video like you were trying to do?

Coughing96 : We are bypassing Hype and going straight to Brandy. Brandy is

truly the auture of the pre-post-.. millenium filmic landscape. This is

weird. I am on a phone in France, being transcribed by my friend Todd in Los

Angeles

BondGirl : Is Yuval planning on touring for his sideproject Firewater and is

Doughty doing any more remix work after the 808 State thing?

Coughing96 : I plan to be spending much more time on my sideproject Haim or

Glover

Puggydan : Why are you guys in France now. On a Europeon tour?

Coughing96 : We are in France. All over the western side. We got to Spain and

Portugal which were pretty amazing.

YKLance : what is the meaning of the song Super Bon- Bon. Is it describing

anything? Is it some sort of metaphor?

Coughing96 : It's about a guy moving through a crowd, excellerating and

thinking if he continues... to excellerate, he will levitate. It is about

becoming obsessed with a lovers... pet name and never being able to forget

it.

Elisa Day : Who are your influenences, musically & poetically?

Coughing96 : Poetically, Alan Dugan. Musically.... I think I'd have to show

you my record collection. The list is too long.

Dove112 : do you guys have more than one album? I don't mean to sound

ignorant or anything. This guy I work with put your music on one day when we

were closing the store and I really liked it a lot

Coughing96 : We jsut put out the second. We have an apocriphyl first album

entitled double M which was neither... released nor recorded.

Sidken : Are you enjoying some fine French wines?

Coughing96 : I don't actually drink... sadly enough. I am enjoying some fine

French Cheese.... Happily, pasturization is not mandated by law in France

PowellQ : what was it like playing lollapalooza with those huge bands

playing simultaneously?

Coughing96 : Um..We went on during Rage Against the Machines set... Sabastion

said it best, "the revolution is cool, but kinda hard to play during"

RTorress71 : Hi, Are the lyrics on disseminated taken from an actual event?

Coughing96 : Theres a bunch of names listed in the second verse of people

that I met on a vacation in Jamaica

Elisa Day : If you could ever cover anyone's elses songs, what band or

artist's song(s), would you bother with?

Coughing96 : We've already done Warpigs... and tonight we debut in fragmented

form... Tommy Tutones "8675309"

Specialty : I assume that the grey stuffed animal on Bliss is Mark's

horsey....correct?

Coughing96 : No, its our friend Frank's horsey

Magritte6 : so, what's doughty going to write about now that he's Happy, and

with Woman?

Coughing96 : Believe me, it opens up a whole new realm of possibilites for

misery.

RTorress71 : How long has the band been together?

Coughing96 : 4 years

Question : Do you write in the studio or on the road, elswhere?

Coughing96 : We write constantly in some of the weirdest moments imaginable.

All of the above.

NYKNICKSS : Who's your favorite basketball team?

Coughing96 : Maybe its obvious but The Chicago Bulls. Just cuz Dennis Rodman

is so Freak-ay

Tmbg345 : How did you working on Cobra come together?

Coughing96 : It was organized by a guy named Eric Qin. I had no idea what his

logic was but it was a.. pretty good gig. Zorn was not actually involved.

Blu420 : how was your recent visit to louisville,ky are you coming back

soon?

Coughing96 : hell yeah.

AlieNs 31 : what do you think of SKA ?

Coughing96 : I love the old Rock shit particularly the Slickers

VWxBoReD : What town are you originally from?

Coughing96 : Im an army brat... so sort of all over. Yuval is from Isreal...

Sebastion from Boston, Mark is from SF

Magritte6 : do they have motel 6 in france?

Coughing96 : Oh lord... no. And my heart is all the heavier becuase of it.

Shahn42 : Do you feel recording for a major conglomerate entertainment

company in any way compromises your artistic stance?

Coughing96 : Some people own their own autobody shop, others gotta go work

for Ford.

Azug : What else do you like to spend time doing besides music?

Coughing96 : Nicotene is pretty much my major hobby. I am not very well

rounded. I don't have a lot of... extra ciricular interests

SoulFlu : did gus ever reach Claire?

Coughing96 : Claire has not called Gus yet. If your out there Clair, please

call Gus. He is listed in the... Pensacola phonebook

BransonH : What is the idea behind the song "Soundtrack to Mary?"

Coughing96 : Its a lovesong... dumb-ass

Tmbg345 : Are you Cheap Trick a fan?

Coughing96 : Hugely. I waited outside Eisenhower hall in Wesport NY for 4

hours to meet them.. in 1984

Smokey407 : How did Cop Shoot Cop get into the liner notes. What is S.C.'s

association with them?

Coughing96 : OUr first tour was opening for Cop Shoot Cop. They were

increadibly cool to us. Tod is still my ... personal hero.

Scoop GOO : So how does 90210 fit in with all this? Is it catharsis? Do

they have it in Yurp?

Coughing96 : Everybody needs a soap opera. It is my advice in finding

happiness in this world.

ZACKBUSTE : who are some current artists you dig?

Coughing96 : I love the magnetic fields. I love Elliot Smith and Echobelly.

ATRIPchic : How do the lyrics come to you? You seem to be rding the stream

of consciousness a lot...

Coughing96 : It frustrates me that this is such an increadibly difficult

question to answer... It is asked of me all the time, but I still really

don't know. It is not stream of consciousness... I work on them. Words come

to me all the time, but it is still a mysterious process to me.

BCarl19778 : was the song used on the x-files compilation written

specifically for that project?

Coughing96 : yes, written specifically as a comment made as a kinda fairy

tale paradigm on the X-Files

BSpurr992 : Since alot of your songs on the albums are based on different

samples you have picked up, as well as ditsortion, etc., how hard is it to

produce that same musical response when you get on stage live

Coughing96 : It is not difficult at all, in fact it is easier on stage than

it is in the studio.

RSSchu97 : Two questions: Why do you think people have just caught on to

you now, when people like me have been loving you for a long time? Also, you

thank REV105 (in Minneapolis) in your album. That's where I heard you first.

What has the station done for you?

Coughing96 : I sacrafice a lamb for Sean Stewart everyday. I don't know why

people are catching on now. Personally, I cought onto myself at around 7.

Tmbh345 : What were you like in high school? The jock? The geek?

Coughing96 : I was the geek with punk rock aspirations.

PowelIQ : Were you guys good at math or did you write the song '4 out of 5'

to help kids remember their arithmetic?

Coughing96 : Im terrible at math. I love the language of math... but you

know, as with everything else... with numbers, the meaning is more elusive to

me than the sonics.

KevinRhin : Do you like Howard Stern?

Coughing96 : The answer is no, but he's really big here in France.

Bob LaBla : doughty, do you realize you are missing a made for tv movie on

nbc RIGHT NOW starring your personal goddess tiffany-amber thiessen?

Coughing96 : Do you have to rub it in

Paganini4 : At the beginning of "Dissemminated," is that a harmonica,

sample, or what?

Coughing96 : It is a sample of Raymond Scott's The Pengiune. its a clarinette

Question : What is irrestibly bliss to you?

Coughing96 : I've found in my life thus far.. there is no bliss I can't

resist. As in I am able to resist any bliss

GGriffin : Doughty: Great show in DC last time. How does it feel being adore

by baseball-hat frat boys and all the girls under 20 know every lyric by

heart?

Coughing96 : It feels like Im living an academy award(tm) every day. Thank

you.

Question : What do you find the swankest of all descriptions of Soul

Coughing?

Coughing96 : The swankest... oh god.. um. This is where the mental processes

break down. "Like a velvet glove cast in iron"

J Dude 96 : Where *is* SunnyDay Real Estate, anyway?

Coughing96 : Jeremy, the former lead singer is touring with us this fall...

with his orchestra I might add. William and Nate are in the Foo Fighters, and

I don't know exactly what Dan is doing.

PowelIQ : Is the devil on the Ruby Vroom cover stoned or just exhausted?

Coughing96 : As if one could not be both at the same time.

Coughing96 : Thank you all for coming out. I really have to recommend France.

The cheese is truly astounding. I'll see you all on the North American

continent in the Fall.
